The trains look like mobile, blue prisons as they roll into the station (usually late), where I wait amongst popcorn and chai vendors, cattle, beggars and many curious eyes. I traveled on 6 trains total, 5 of which were overnight trains. Each car has 4 or 5 compartments and each compartment contains 8 bunk beds. 2 sets of triple bunks and 1 set or doubles. If you are lucky, you will end up in the double bunk, where there is more space to sit up in your bed.
The beauty of taking these trains is the converations with locals, as they give suggestions of places to visit and things to see. You can also practice using a squat toilet while speeding down the tracks, or hang out the open door and watch the beautiful Indian country side pass by.
